The Horticulture Department was initiated to take care of Eufaula’s urban forest which includes all public trees within seventy square miles. Historically, trees have played a major role in the town life of Eufaula and in 1994 a tree ordinance was passed by the City Council to establish tree preservation, tree removal and tree planting procedures for new businesses. The department plants an average of 150 trees a year. In 2010, Eufaula celebrated its 26th year as a member of Tree City USA at the City’s annual Arbor Day. The Department now has an International Certified Arborist on board.

Since 1994, the Horticulture Department has expanded its horticultural practices and has grown steadily since that time. The Department designs, plants and maintains numerous flower beds within the City. They grow all of these flowers in the City’s greenhouse. They maintain the historic Fairview Cemetery.

In 1997, the Horticulture Department affiliated with Audubon International to create an international pilot program. A citizen based visioning process was initiated in 2000 based on Audubon’s principles of sustainability. In October 2002 Eufaula was designated by Audubon International as the first sustainability community in the nation.

2008 brought on a new project Rails to Trails. Two and a half miles of railroad track have been paved and converted into a beautiful walking trail. See Yoholo Micco, the Creek Indian Trail. For more information, contact the city horticulturist Sherry Burchett at sburchett@eufaula.rr.com.
